Knock-Knock

Come and knock on my door [Come and knock my door]... I've been waiting for you [I’ve been waiting for you]... where the knockers are big, bold, glam and begging for you! Every door deserves an audacious little morsel; a bold suggestion that beckons the cordial.  One that abolishes the mundane and honors the abnormal! A symbolic statement that defines its dweller[s]; a sensational treasure that's mount-worthy and stellar. Whether it's the lioness and her legendary roar or perhaps the lady of the house on your door, a knocker for your entrance is something to explore. When your door is decidedly rockin' you'll be astounded at who might come a knockin'!

How to: Create Sparkly Effects in your Photos

bokeh.jpg
We've mentioned "Bokeh" here before - it's a photography technique that involves, basically, interesting blurring. (In fact, the term comes from the Japanese word boke-aji, meaning, "blur quality.")

MAKE's Matt Richardson has a great how-to video showing you how easy it is to create bokeh effects in any shape you like - all you need is an SLR camera, some black paper and a craft knife.
If you'd like to see lots more bokeh examples, Flickr abounds with bokeh groups.

Sangria!

A pitcher of Sangria accompanied nearly every one of our meals when we ventured to Puerto Rico for my birthday. So now that summer is upon us, I thought it would be the perfect summer party drink. It is a fun concoction to make because it invites you to try new flavors and combinations. We have been perfecting our recipe for weeks...the key building blocks are listed below:

1.5 liter bottle of burgundy wine
Approx 6 shots triple sec
Can of sliced pineapple with juice (10 rings)
Sugar/honey to taste
1 Orange
1 Peach
1 Apple
1 Mango
1 or 2 Kiwi (1 for garnishment)
6 sliced strawberries
Ice

Refrigerate in large pitcher until ready to serve

Serve over ice, spoon fruit in, garnish with kiwi or strawberry and enjoy!

Silver Shatter

I've been on the hunt for some shatter/crackle top coats for some time now. I've been dying to try one out. I recently came across a huge display of O.P.I. Silver Shatter, so naturally I was inclined to make a purchase. My nails had been painted a pretty coral color (also by O.P.I., but the name escapes me), so I applied one coat over each nail and watched as the silver top coat "shattered".
The top coat is fast drying and almost immediately after application begins to crack. Because of this, a liberal swipe of color works best.

Silver Shatter will give your nails a gritty, tough girl, finish. If you want to try something fun & new, I would recommend tracking this or any of the six other O.P.I. Shatter shades down. The product is certainly easy to use, and would be fun to try over various nail polish shades. I love the novelty of the product, and the fact that the unpredictable cracks transforms your nails with each application. I'm not sure I love the silver shatter shade itself as it reminds me of cracked concrete. Given I have an entire bottle of it, I am eager to try it out on my array of nail polish shades. I think the silver is calling for a purple base, or maybe a fun glitter shade. If you can't find O.P.I.'s shatter shades, look out for China Glaze & Sally Hansen also have Crackle top-coats in various shades that will give you a similar look.

Summer Treat!

alt
Cut up three lemons and two limes and add it into the blender with a 1/2 cup of water, 1/3 cup sugar, half a tray of ice cubes and a few mint leaves.

alt
Blend and taste. Place in the freezer while you prepare the lemon cups.

alt
Using the lemon halves you've already cup up, use a grapefruit spoon or knife to clean out the inside. This is easy enough with a grapefruit spoon that kids will love to help

alt
They only take a few seconds to clean out

alt
Slice off a small piece of the bottom so they can sit flat. When they're done fill them with the slush, overflowing.

and place in the freezer until you're ready to servealt

Take them out when you're little ones but you for a summer treat!

Inspiration: Nuria Mora

Nuria Mora has been an inspiration of mine for quite sometime (see this post), and so when I heard about her new installation where she painted on a rooftop by the East River in New York City, I had to go take a look. See the result (just below) and the process here.

Then I came across this
video and thought you'd like to see more of her work too. I love her use of colours and the graphics. I'd love to somehow translate some of this block coloured graphics on a wall in a house.

Typography String Art

Ok, I'm no where close to getting married but I recently came across this amazing Wedding craft. Kyle Read made this typography string art sign for a wedding invitation project, and my inner font geek is totally freaking out. Who knew that a roll of string and a pile of nails could make something so beautiful?
